I hereby declare that if the "world" should actually "end," as all those amusing morons think it will, I shall stop writing.*

Meanwhile...

Yesterday, I wrote 2,507 words on Black Helicopters. I'm relieved to be writing solid, substantial, dense text again. Joyously, unashamedly tough text. Prose that makes both me and the reader work. Blood Oranges is quite enjoyable, but after two novel's worth of putting "story" before all other concerns, it's nice to be back doing the sort of writing where every syllable of every word of every sentence was chosen with great care, and where "meaning" can be as complex and slippery as I desire. Also, I'm starting to think that I'll be keeping Black Helicopters as the title.

Anything else? Not really. Not at the moment. Things are very quiet around here, and after the past year, I believe I may actually be glad for the quiet.

It would be hard to imagine a more dismal day than the one we are having here in Providence, there outside my window.

I am deeply in love with How To Destroy Angels' "Ice Age." It's the nearest anyone has come to capturing all of The Drowning Girl: A Memoir in a single (and very simple) song.

Opaque,
Aunt Beast

The end of the world stuff simply reminds me that people, generally, are stupid.

In times like this, amusingly so.

I'd heard startlingly negative things about How to Destroy Angels from my Nine Inch Nails purist friends, but my own experiences were that the experiment was just fine. I suppose I found it a little jarring at first to hear a feminine voice where I'd expected to hear Trent's, but that didn't last.

It's almost kind of unfortunate that Trent's decided to put NIN back together and seek out a major label again. I rather liked the possibilities with this group.

I loved the first EP.

A reformed NIN doesn't necessarily end the continuation of this group, does it?

Not necessarily, but from what I'd read, it was suggested that this group was put together as a protest against the abuse artists suffer under large label marketing and distribution monopolies. Now that Trent's gone back to the labels, they may not look too kindly on a return to this, or any, project that doesn't make them money.

I suppose it all depends on the stipulations in the new contract.

It'd be great if you could have a selective apocalypse for morons, but that'll never happen.

Thanks for the heads-up on HTDA - that's a great track.

Like with any of the "biblically calculated raptures" that have come and gone, I'm looking for one of these end of the world fools who'll prove they believe what they profess to believe by signing all of their assets over to me as of December 22nd, 2012. No one ever takes me up on these things though. Curious.

Cowardice lurks in every human soul. There is no genuine conviction.

Glad to hear that the writing is again engaging for you. What you describe above are precisely the reasons why I so savour reading your work.

When things start to go well, I comfort myself by having no expectations.

That said, you sound good. I am glad.

Just as the end of the world morons won't sign over their goods and chattels to you, people who profess not to believe in a soul will never sell their soul to you. I know, I've tried. I always like to hedge my bets.

Hi, just in case you haven't seen that Agents of Dreamland is in the top 10 strangest alien invasion novels in the UK Guardian. There's a great short write up of it.
