"Feed the Tree"

Well, I tried to sleep, and now I'm awake...my mind racing with things I'd rather not think about.

Anyway, for everyone too young (or not young enough) to recall the Belly song that inspired my "Feed the Tree" line, and various other references, here you go. For me, this song is two summers, '93 and '94. I wrote so many stories to this album:

That's one of the songs that I will always associate with my freshman year of high school. That and "Gepetto" and a bunch of Nirvana songs from "In Utero." :)

Sigh... "Feed the Tree" reminds me of my beloved grandfather. I never knew formally what the song meant, but it always seemed to me to be a song about old-fashioned respect and devotion. The line "Take your hat off when you're talking to me and be there when I feed the tree" always make me think of him.

He was an old school, West Texas rancher and he always had on a Stetson that came off the moment a woman was around. My grandmother was very sick the last decade of her life and he took very good care of her until the day she died, until the day she fed the tree. Then the part about the old man breaking his heart, pouring it on the ground and red tree sprouts up... Yeah, a lot of heavy personal symbolism for me.

This song and REM's "Driver 8" never fail to make me cry in a good way because they bring back memories of my maternal grandparents.

So thanks for posting this. My mind was racing too and it still is, but is now racing on far more pleasant fuel.

Love that song... That was a really great period for me, coming out of a few not-so-good years to finally have some excellent friends and become the "me" that I am now.
