No rest for the wicked (as true today as...)

I was in bed at a decent hour last night. Before 2:30 ayem. And I almost fell asleep about an hour later. But then, inexplicably, I was awake again, despite the pills, despite genuine exhaustion. I lay there, and lay there, and lay there, and at 4:30 ayem I took a second tab of zolpidem tartrate, which did the trick. And still is doing the trick. Really, I don't know how I'm sitting upright and typing. I may not be much longer. Spooky let me sleep until 11:30, but it just wasn't long enough to sleep away the effects of the drug.

Yesterday, I wrote 1,614 words and finished Chapter Five of The Red Tree. Only three chapters to go, I think, so I just might get this done, after all. The manuscript now stands at 57,995 words.

On Tuesday, my box of comp copies of the mass-market paperback of Daughter of Hounds arrived.

Last night, after a little rp and some work on the HE sim, we finished reading Clive Barker's "Cabal." It's a far, far better written novella than is "The Hellbound Heart," but its greatest strength remains the author's imagination, not his ability to communicate what he has imagined. The idea of the Nightbreed, more than Barker's realization of them. It makes me wish he would rewrite this particular story, because, though good in its current form, it could be great. The only thing that really made me roll my eyes is the moment when Boone and Lori put the jail escape on pause to have clunky, wordy, preternatural sex. I can think of no better example of THE SEX SCENE bringing a story to a screeching halt. Poor Narcisse. But there are some truly fine moments in the prose, especially during Lori's initial exploration of Midian and then during the destruction of the necropolis and the exodus of the Nightbreed (which still leaves me heartsick).

Gods, I'm too asleep to type....

Please have a look at the current eBay auctions. Bid if you are so able. Thank you. Now, I'm gonna go beat this platypus till hesheit bleeds daylight....
