World Biodiversity Day (today)

May 22nd is World Biodiversity Day (also known as the International Day for Biological Diversity). The last "Tasmanian Tiger" (Thylacinus cynocephalus), died on the night of 7 September 1933.

This piece of film has me in tears. How utterly sad these animals, and so many others, have been wiped into obvlivion. And so many more destined to go the same way...

I saw a documentary a few months ago about an attempt to clone the Tasmanian Tiger, but I can't seem to find any information about the project more recent than what Wikipedia has. I hope they do manage to succeed eventually.

I had never thought that footage of them existed . . . It's strangely sad.
