Pulitzer news

I was extremely pleased to learn that Cormac McCarthy has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for The Road, despite Oprah Winfrey having inexplicably associated herself with the novel. I guess that just goes to prove the adage about there being no such thing as bad publicity.

I was also very, very glad to find out that an honorary Pulitzer was awarded to Ray Bradbury, who, as far as I know, has been fortunate enough to escape the ravages of Winfrey.

I was so shocked when McCarthy turned up on Oprah's list. I had a super-pretentious professor in college who purported himself to be one of a handful of rabid Cormac McCarthy fans, and certainly one of maybe five who actually understood his novels (which I always rolled my eyes at; they aren't the most accesible, but they aren't impossible) I can't imagine how he must have felt when Oprah's droves started reading him.

Yes, that well sums up my feelings about seeing Oprah's sticker on The Road's trade paperback. I haven't read it yet, but I saw that in the bookstore and my first reaction was, "That's OK, I'll get it from the library."

Hello! I'm on a solo bus tour (violin) and am in east Atlanta for the night. I brought comics with me too, and some kids in St. Louis wanted me to explain what motivated a story, and all I could say was that I listened to SOmething Wicked This Way Comes while drawing it.
