Wives of Nightfall & Whatnot.

I see it's considerably later than I'd thought it was, by about forty minutes, and I really am trying to get to bed earlier these days. However, I came across this today in tanthe's LJ and was so very delighted with it that I feel an urgentish need to repost it here:

Please, please steal and repost.

Also, I've been meaning to post this link for ages, but, lately, many important things get forgotten indefintely:

A CALL TO ACTION IN SUPPORT OF PETER S. BEAGLE, AUTHOR OF THE LAST UNICORN.

If you're presently unaware of Beagle's ongoing troubles with Granada Media, I urge you to have a look.

Right. Now I brush my teeth and go to bed.

Jeez, and I hated Granada just for not releasing The Last Unicorn in widescreen. I was so excited when I heard it was coming to DVD, and it was a dark day when I heard it was just a sloppy transfer from the pan-and-scan VHS. Ugh. They suck Cheney artery.

I suspect that the reason why people don't use vowels in Textspeak is because they use them exclusively in verbal communication: Robin Williams once described this sort of speech as "vowel movements". I deal with this at work on a constant basis, and I'd give my left arm to be able to tell some of my customers "Excuse me, but could you please take your grandson's penis out of your mouth while we're having this conversation?"

Thank you for linking Beagle's woes. He will be reading at New College in San Francisco June 13th. (Katharine Kerr will be reading as well. A very rare appearance) The readings will be at 7pm and is only $4.00.

This is an ongoing series hosted by Terry Bisson. It has been a lot of fun.

I only wish I were presently in a financial position to do more than pass along the news. This is such a horrifying and infuriating situation.

I knew the story of Peter Beagle and The Last Unicorn, but not of the Saul Zaentz mess. That one sounds depressingly familiar and I may use it as a reference when people ask me why I don't try to get more of my stuff "out there", or assume I must be doing well financially since you can buy a DVD with my name on it on Amazon (don't... I don't see any money).

This part is especially, depressingly true: Worse than being just a civil contract case, this is a movie industry contract case. Movie industry cases are automatically stacked in favor of the big media corporations and against the artist by a ridiculously complicated and highly specialized mingling of contract law, copyright law, trademark law, entertainment law, tax law, and class action law, plus the need to have inside knowledge of Hollywood accounting and international film distribution practices. It literally takes teams of highly paid professionals to fight through this protective tangle.

Where did I put those razor blades, anyway.....

Sadly, it's a myth that fame and exposure lead to one being financially successful. And then we have to factor in the crooks...

That's the part that drives me nuts and makes me angry: the crooks. It's one thing to voluntarily choose to be in a profession that has random work, and usually only a modest return for time invested. It's a whole 'nother pile of dung to have some slick shark with no morals or ethics steal your work (with an unfulfilled promise of money no less!) and use it to profit themselves. It's too bad that in addition to requesting money for damages, that I cannot also request 5 minutes alone with a baseball bat and certain kneecaps.

Consider both yoink'd as soon as I get home from work.

Man, if this hadn't been the only time in the last six months I haven't taken out a payday loan.

Reading this makes me think that the worst thing I could wish on an author is a big-budget movie adaptation. This is a close second.

Meteor, comets, cosmic meatball. I care no longer.

I revisited this post earlier today to show a friend that brilliant "Save the Vowels" banner, and she showed me this user icon, which I think you might find amusing, too:
