Mountains Beyond Mountains (2018)

The sun's out today, after an utterly gloomy Sunday. Sunday's are bad enough all on their own, without rainy weather to lend a hand. Currently, it's 66˚F, and our high will be 76˚F. Back home, it's 44˚F, with a windchill of 37˚F. I do not know how I'm supposed to go "home" to winter.

I'm having trouble with time zones, with adjusting to Central, when this time of year I'm living on Eastern +1 (=Daylight Savings Time). That means my body clock is set to two hours ahead of local time here in Alabama. It's like low-level jet lag. I'm not sleeping much, and the days are over before they've begun.

Yesterday was both fruitless and depressing. Wherever we find a house, it will not be in that section of Birmingham north of Roebuck – Center Point, Huffman, etc. We drove it yesterday, as far north as Jefferson State Junior College. So many neighborhoods that used to be nice have fallen on hard times. I think much of the blame falls on the squalid sprawl of strip malls that dominate Center Point Parkway. Then again, this is what seems to happen to suburbs. Entropy. The inevitable decay of the landscape of my childhood. We may look a little more in Irondale and Roebuck, but mostly I think yesterday only served to drive home (ha ha ha) how unlikely it is we can find anything that suits our needs, within our budget, in Birmingham.

I think today needs to serve as a sort of emotional recovery day. We'll likely stay in Leeds, or, if we wander, we will not wander very far.

Later Taters,
Aunt Beast
