I will refrain from talking about how shitty the day was, because I am not in New Orleans or Houma or Grand Isle or any of the other places hit so hard by Hurricane Ida. My whining gets the evening off.
The day's comfort film was David Twohy's Pitch Black (2000). I just love this movie. I honestly do. No, not great cinema, but pretty goddamn good for a low(ish)-budget alien action flick. I know Vin Diesel is supposed to be the star of the show, but, personally, for me it's Radha Mitchell's film, and Cole Hauser isn't so bad, though he never rises much above a poor man's Matthew McConaughey. Great score by Graeme Revell, and I love the art direction and cinematography. Though the CGI wobbles every now and then, the alien design, courtesy John Cox's Creature Workshop, is wonderful. So, I think there's a lot here to admire, if you look past an occasionally wonky screenplay and Mr. "I am Groot." And yeah, Pitch Black spawned a bigger budget, more epic, and vastly more mediocre sequel and then a truly awful third film. So, stick to the original.
Please have a look at the current eBay auctions. Thank you.
Last night, we watched two more episodes of the Snowpiercer TV series, but I'm throwing in the towel. It's not for me. You want a good dose of dystopian SF? I'd recommend See, instead.
