"And drowning is no sin."

The weather is not unpleasant today. It was considerably less unpleasant before I realized that this is the last day of Green Autumn (some other parts of the world might have Summer), that tomorrow is the equinox. I have no idea why my Wiccan acquaintances are calling today Mabon, by the way. Because tomorrow is the equinox. This is one reason why I made such a lousy Wiccan. I needed things to make sense.

I was up at the uncommonly early hour of 10:30 a.m.

I keep waiting for Peter Capaldi to click, and he keeps not clicking. Last night we watched "Time Heist," and it was a muddled, chaotic mess that finally came together in the last few minutes. Without Clara Oswald, the season would be, so far, an utter loss. Even Matt Smith clicked for me. I could believe him in the role. He just didn't click enough that I could see past the Ponds to enjoy him. Note that I said "Ponds." I was usually fine with Amy. Once Clara showed up, I loved the Matt Smith episodes. These episodes just drag on, with Peter Capadi looking lost and muttering all but incoherently in whatever that language is he speaks while Jenna Coleman looks, by turns, bored and frustrated. Oh, and Clara's grown the apparently necessary boyfriend, which is helping nothing whatsoever. If the writers can think of no other way to give a character depth but to stick them in a relationship outside their role as Companion, they might at least have given Clara a girlfriend. Or is that only allowed when we're talking about lizard women from the dawn of time? So, I say again, maybe next week.

Please note again: We're getting eBay back up and running. And every winning bidder gets a FREE Alabaster "Because Bird" pin. Also, the same deal applies to sales from Spooky's Etsy shop, while my limited supply lasts.

Yesterday I began a story that used neither of the titles I posted here yesterday, because it's an altogether different story. I hope it will be called "A Birth in the Wood of Self-Murderers." And hopefully I'll be able to finish this one, because I'm out of time.

Somehow, I squandered.

Fuck.

TTFN,
Aunt Beast

I like him but it feels like an ostrich in a flamingo suit, an odd fit at this point. Mainly I feel it's because the show is still essentially being written for the zanier Tennant or Smith brand of Doctor, I think Capaldi would benefit from a slightly more low key tone. I think the writers are trying to tap Malcolm Tucker a little bit, too, which I don't think quite works.

My friend suggested they're trying to do something like what was attempted with the Sixth Doctor's earlier episodes, which was to make him a bit pettier, more of a scoundrel. It rather infamously didn't work with the Sixth, I don't know why they'd attempt it again.

they might at least have given Clara a girlfriend.

That would be cool but just about anything would be better than that massive lump of porridge called Danny.

Maybe. I was told this would be a "darker Doctor." If so, the writers nee dot look back towards 9.

It's become a wearisome plot element. Mickey was bad enough. Rory was intolerable. And we've reached the point where there's Clara's soap opera and her wacky friend the Doctor.

Yeah, or Seven's final season. It seems like there's been a general push towards a darker Doctor since the Fifth's last season with Caves of Androzani really succeeding with a kind of morally ambiguous hero. Mainly I would love to see some more atmosphere with Twelve, longer, quieter scenes. That's partly why I want the show to go back to serial format.

Yeah. The strategy of recruiting sitcom writers like Steven Moffat and Russel T. Davies, seemingly following the Joss Whedon model, has generally worked out but this kind of plot is exactly the sort of thing I would be afraid of happening.

Yeah, or Seven's final season.

I know nothing of Who before 9. I've tried, and it's just all too goofy for my liking.

Not sure what you mean....

I was fond of Russell T. Davies. He's missed.

Weird, I find the new series much goofier, though not in a way I dislike necessarily. I guess the grass is goofier on the other side, or something like that.

The old series was structured like old movie serials, thirty minute episodes that ended with cliffhangers. With the first three Doctors, there were serials as long as ten episodes allowing a story to really spread out. Sometimes this led to stories being repetitive but most of the time I felt it was a strength, it allowed more time to establish and develop characters who would only be appearing in one story. In the Fourth Doctor's era, serials were usually four episodes with a seven episode finale serial, and from then on serials got shorter and shorter.

I was fond of Russell T. Davies. He's missed.

I really love some of his episodes, especially ones from the beginnings of his seasons.

I long for something more than just Doctor and Clara in wacky settings and situations. At this rate I am far more interested in trying to see The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot than anything from this season.

I was confused about this too. When I look at my calendars (work, home, etc.) they are conflicting. One listed Monday the 22nd as "First Day of Autumn" and another says it was Tuesday the 23rd. And while most Google searches say Mabon was on the 23rd there are some that say the 22nd.

After consulting the timeanddate website I think I see where the confusion arises:

September Equinox in Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A. was on
Monday, September 22, 2014 at 10:29 PM EDT

September Equinox in Universal Coordinated Time was on
Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 02:29 UTC
